Driving in San Juan: Tips for a Smooth Ride
Driving in San Juan is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. With a few tips, you'll be getting around like a local in no time.
Know the Main Roads
The main highways — like PR-26 and PR-1 — connect most of the city and the coast. They're your fastest way around. Smaller streets in Old San Juan are narrow and one-way, so park nearby and walk when you can.
Watch for Traffic
Rush hour can get busy, especially in and out of the city center. If you can, plan your drives outside of the busiest times. A little flexibility goes a long way.
Parking
Look for public lots and metered spots. In Old San Juan and Condado, street parking can be tight, so a paid lot is often the easiest option. Keep some quarters handy just in case.
Take It Easy
Local drivers are used to the flow of the city. Stay relaxed, use your signals, and don't stress — everyone's just trying to get where they're going.
Get Comfortable First
Before heading into busy areas, spend a few minutes getting used to your rental car. Adjust the mirrors, set your seat, and you'll feel a lot more confident.
